ACADEMIC SENATE MEETING NOTES - MAY 7, 2015
- 1. GUESTS: Craig J., Dennis G., Cathleen G.
- 2. PUBLIC COMMENTS: 1) Roy and Brittany discussed commencement speaker committee. Apparently someone was taken off the already made list that committee was forwarding. The committee took the name of one person off the list. Kathy said she spoke to Glenn in cabinet about the matter. Process was not followed. 2) Melanie advertised her reading classes being offered during the summer, including RD 74 critical reading and RD 370. Send your students! She also shamelessly plugged her breast cancer fundraiser for May 16th. Let me know if you are interested in attending this fun-filled night of live music (shameless plug). 3) Dennis thanked all who attended the Foundation Dinner. Net income $38k with $18k going to student scholarships. Scholarship ceremony will be in the morning the day before graduation. Implemented changes based on suggestions. Oct 14: save the date for the Golf Tournament event. 4) Michelle S: Therapy dogs for stress relief for students during finals. Next week and the following week. Apparently there will be a therapy dove as well. 5) Tracy F: Concerns with distance Ed exams and proctoring. Sent concerns forward to DE committee and online ed committee.
- 3. SCHOOL REPORTS: [Life?] Science: Community Garden site chosen and approved. We can plant veggies :) PE: Sand Volley Ball State Championships. Counseling: Transfer center toured central and northern Cal colleges, including Stanford, Berkley, UCSF and USF and some Cal state schools. 16 of the students [travel?] were paid for through SEP funds and 6 were ASIVC and some paid. Students really enjoyed and connected with these schools with reps and had a great time. Targeted kids who wouldn’t have the means to tour outside this area or wouldn’t normally consider going out of the area. Business: completed interviews for their two positions. Arts: Jonathon Girard - alumni - large band, took classes here, transferred to UCI and now a graduate student - UC Santa Cruz has asked him to speak at a graduate seminar, an award from UCI. 5-6 years ago when he came here he barely could read music. Dan Luzco had him in classes.
